Fobos (spacecraft mock-up)

The programme called for entering Mars orbit, approaching Phobos to within 50 metres and dropping two landers, one of which was to move by hopping in near-zero gravity. Instruments from fourteen countries were carried aboard. Fobos-1 was lost to an erroneous command from Earth; Fobos-2 reached Mars orbit, returned images of the moon and data on its thermal emission, but contact was lost just before the close approach. The lessons were built into later interplanetary spacecraft. The mock-up is kept in the HANGAR-Z reserve and can be seen on tours of the restricted collection.
