A planetarium exhibition on space navigation: from the mechanical Globus IMP to the interplanetary cruise of Venera 7.
A Globus IMP instrument stood on the console of every Vostok and Soyuz: its rotating globe showed the cosmonaut the point beneath the spacecraft and computed the landing site in the event of an emergency deorbit. The mechanism is displayed with its casing removed, its clockwork gears visible in motion.
The second section explains interplanetary navigation through Venera 7: communication sessions, trajectory corrections and a landing on a planet whose surface pressure is ninety times that of Earth. For the run of the exhibition the planetarium dome shows the sky exactly as the ballistics teams of 1970 saw it.
The route closes with star trackers and the sextant of the orbital stations — the instruments crews used to check on their automatics.
